The OSIRIS objective is to demonstrate the potential benefits of a dynamic integration of traffic data within GIS. Its aim is twofold: (1) to improve current graphic capabilities and database functions of a traffic monitoring system and (2) to explore analysis tools that can provide some temporal animations for the visualisation of traffic conditions within an urban network.
The prototype is based on several communication and software components that together provide a complete chain of traffic data processing and analysis within a GIS. This application takes advantage of a monitoring system (SCOOT) that measures real-time traffic data and develops a set of functions for the integration, management and visual analysis of traffic data flows within a geographical database.
The OSIRIS implementation is realised on top of the MapInfo for Windows GIS, using C++, Delphi (a windows GUI editor and Pascal compiler) and the MapBasic programming languages. The geographical component of our database is based on Ordnance Survey Centre Alignment of Roads (OSCAR) data. Such a database provides a comprehensive representation of the traffic network. The scale of the database is 1:10 000 with an accuracy of one meter. This geographical reference acts as a support layer for the development of the geographical component of the traffic database.
The aim of the visualisation tools is to complete the spatial and dynamic
view by temporal and statistical charts that provide complementary perspectives.
The techniques we retain reflect the dynamic properties of the database
generated. Animations allow users to browse through the temporal traffic
states of the selected and aggregated traffic values within a considered
period of time.
