The availability of the DIME
harness, which is protecting the SCOOT traffic control system from the
otherwise inevitable computational overheads imposed by applications that require
access to real-time traffic data,
has created the possibility of developing large-scale traffic
information systems that provide a journey-specific information to
a large number of individual road users in real-time.
This project has developed a low-level GSM communications based software
that avoids inefficiencies associated with the use of generic mobile connectivity
tools such as web-browsers. The system provides a useful test-bed for the on-going
research into advanced traffic information systems and can be readily adapted
to the need of other researchers who would wish to undertake collaborative
investigation into transport telematics applications.
